Two generations, one atelier

The Designer

Pummy and Ishneet. Two generations working in one atelier.

01

Pummy

The house carries her name because it began with her. In 1985 she started dressing women the way she thought they should be dressed: generously cut, finished by hand and without chasing what everyone else was doing.

Forty years later, the atelier still works to the habits she set. The hand work goes in one place, the rest of the piece is left plain and the cloth is allowed to fall the way it wants to.

02

Ishneet

Ishneet is the second generation. She carries on the hand work Pummy built and designs for a woman who often goes from her desk to lunch to an evening out in the same clothes.

How they work

Together and slowly. A style starts with a length of cloth and a decision about where the hand work will sit. Samples are made in the atelier, worn, taken apart and cut again. Nothing goes into the collection until both of them are sure of it. That is why the collection stays small and why pieces stay in it for years.

04

The karigars

The embroidery, beading, pearl work and pintucks are done by karigars the house has worked with for years. They work in our own atelier, not somewhere far away. So if a motif looks better half an inch to one side, it can be moved that same morning, while it is being stitched.
